Why we don’t recommend anxiety medication to our clients

In the UK, anti-anxiety medications like Fluoxetine (Prozac), Clomipramine (Clomicalm), and Trazodone are often prescribed to help dogs with problem behaviours such as separation anxiety, reactivity or aggression.

In the UK, we also have a huge epidemic of ‘trainers’ observing extreme behaviour problems, recommending one of the above medications and providing no more advice. This is generally due to lack of experience with the problem behaviour.
Many of our clients come to us having seen multiple ‘trainers’ previously, and they don’t always want their dogs to be on sedative medication.

Whether you medicate your dog or not is YOUR choice - if your dog is benefiting from the medication, we’re happy for you! But, in terms of behaviour, anti-anxiety medication threatens to manage or mask symptoms at best. Without understanding (and addressing) the root cause of why the dog is reactive on walks/reactive in the house/aggressive to visitors, anti-anxiety medication can be useless at best and can provide a false sense of security at worst.

We prefer to address behavioural problems rather than put a plaster on them, and we also don’t wish to introduce potential side effects which could hinder your dog’s learning.

Our advice to you is to ask questions. Ask your trainer how the anti-anxiety medication will help aggression and how you will begin weaning off the drugs. Ask what else the trainer recommends alongside medication. Ask what skills your dog needs to learn alongside being medicated.

We recently discovered our baby son had an unpleasant tongue tie, resulting in gastrointestinal discomfort & disturbed sleep.

How is this relevant to dog training?

We as parents noticed what was undesirable (disturbed sleep) - the professionals noticed why the disturbed sleep was occurring.

This is why we always ask you a multitude of questions before you start working with us.

Are you the dog’s first home? Did the dog come from a good or bad breeder? Or did the dog come from a shelter? Overseas or UK? Does the dog have any health conditions? What is the dog’s genetic temperament?

The matter of a new dog starting with us potentially having a health condition has been on my mind lately following the tongue tie debacle.

A dog with a poor diet & unhappy stomach probably feels sore & miserable.
A dog with bad hips probably has intermittent pain all day.
A dog with recurrent ear infections may be sensitive around the head & neck.

Now I’m not saying those are excuses for reactivity or that you should allow bad behaviour because your dog has a health problem, but how do you feel when you’re injured or unwell?

We will always tell you if your dog’s health needs to be improved before/alongside training 👍🏻

PS the baby sleeps better at night now following a tongue tie snip… but certainly doesn’t sleep through the night! 🥱😂

Same goes if your dog trainer slates the use of certain tools yet uses them on their own dog.

Today I completely understood why our clients don’t want to walk their nervous dogs

Panzer is the most tolerant, stable dog we have, but even she was tested today when:

• a woman bent down and put her face in Panzer’s face, after being told she’s not interested in people
• a whippet did zoomies around her then glued its nose up her backside
• a small, frustrated dog on an extendable leash yapped in her face for the time I took to step over the other small, frustrated dogs on extendable leashes and move aside
• a Labrador also glued its nose up her backside then tried to mount her

Panzer was on the leash for 3 of these interactions…. Not one person had control of their dog, apologised for not having control of their dog, or regained control of their dog.

So yeah, no wonder people are so scared to go out before they start seeing us.

We teach skills that help you recover from these events. Whether it be an emergency down, muzzling, emergency recall, dog neutrality, all of the above, we can help you.

Thanks everyone who’s booked onto our puppy packages! We’re super excited to give your puppy the best possible start in life 👌🏻

In a world of misinformation, there’s nothing more important than starting your puppy training correctly from day 1.

On that note, please don’t wait until your puppy is ‘fully vaccinated’ to start training them! We are appalled at how many of you have been told to keep your puppies inside until they have had further vaccinations. Of course we value safety above anything, but the fearmongering concerning potential germs is extremely damaging to socialisation. There are plenty of ways to start training correctly without harming your puppy. Not starting training from day 1 is what’s harmful!

The typical puppy’s early months look something like this:

• stay in the house & garden until the puppy is 3 or even 4 months old whilst waiting for vaccinations 😐
• commence ‘puppy socialisation classes’, building too much value in dogs for some puppies & confirming fears for the shyer puppies 😐
• go on a walk to the local park once or twice a day, pulling on the lead the entire time, where interactions with dogs are undesirable 😐
• develop a terrible inability to settle in the home, with behaviours such as demand barking & destroying the house commonplace 😐

3 things that are very hard to have if the opportunity is missed, but 3 things which will make you a brilliant adult dog.

Relationship & Recall not only pay into each other but are self-explanatory; Resilience is something lots of people overlook.

In a world where most pups are sadly poorly-bred, confidence must has to be built because it is not inherited.

Think about what situations you want your adult dog to be bombproof in, and start exposing your puppy to those situations now.

Please don’t wait until your puppy is ‘fully vaccinated’ to start safely showing them the world - those early weeks only happen once!
